But what do love, fate, and fortune have in store for the next generation of Serendipity's finest? Assistant D.A. Erin Marsden is Serendipity's quintessential good girl. The daughter of the former police chief, she's never made a misstep, content with her quiet, predictable life...or so she thinks. Until Cole Sanders shows up with heated interest in his eyes and shadows in his past. After seven years of deep undercover work in New York, Cole returns to town to help his aging father and find his moral compass again. Not to get involved with wholesome Erin Marsden. Even as a rebellious teen, he knew a girl like Erin was off limits. But neither can resist their off-the-charts chemistry, and a one-night stand brings complications neither expected. Then a case puts Erin in a killer's crosshairs, and Erin succumbs to Cole's take-charge attitude. As a bodyguard, he's the best. As a lover, he's even better. But there's more than Erin's safety at stake. And Cole must forgive the sins of his past and prove to himself--and to Erin--that he's capable of the love and the forever she so desperately needs.

Before knowing about the baby, Cole made it clear that all they had was the one night. His life and career is very solitary as he’s often working undercover for long periods of time and he’s only in Serendipity to rest in between assignments. He’s also not exactly the town hero. He caused some trouble when he was younger and having a dad still living in Serendipity who talks badly about him any chance he gets doesn’t help either. Cole doesn’t think he’s good enough for Erin and he’d just ruin her life, so after their one night together he ignores her and goes about his solo, lonely life until he finds out about the baby that changes all his plans. Erin has a successful career as an attorney, she’s surrounded by family and close friends and is the town darling. She felt like there was more between her and Cole, even after just one night, but since he’s not giving her the time of day, she’s trying to move on with her life. But a person from Cole’s past is in Serendipity and not at all happy with Erin. After a close call being shot at in a parking lot, the news comes out about the baby and everyone in Serendipity seems to have an opinion on the matter. But more importantly now Erin’s life is in danger and Cole refuses to let her out of his sight and moves in to protect her and their baby until the threat is found and captured. I really enjoyed Erin. She’s smart, level headed and never lets anything get her down. Cole frustrates her with his firm stance that nothing will ever develop between them even though they can’t help but become closer the longer he’s living with her. Erin tries to go into this with her eyes wide open, ready to accept whatever Cole can give her and they do share some hot and steamy time together. Their scenes together have that sexy/sweet combo that comes alive on page. Erin lets her heart get involved and I ended up liking her all the more for that. Cole, I enjoyed him for the most part, but I did find his “nothing can happen between us beyond this case” got a little old as the story went on. But, we do get a lot of detail surrounding Cole and his relationship with his father and I loved those scenes. His father, I wanted to smack a few times, but it drove home the point of the type of verbal abuse Cole has been around for years and I liked seeing Erin be fully in his corner and stand up for him to not only his father, but to her brothers and even the town. Erin’s influence on Cole was much needed as she gave him strength to deal with his father and to start thinking about the future and what he really wanted for his life and for Erin and the baby. It’s always fun to see other residents of Serendipity show up and we get quite a bit of time with Erin’s brothers, Sam and Mike and Mike’s wife Cara. I love a good girlfriend being included in the story and Erin’s friend Macy had me laughing with just her loud outspoken personality. It’s fun to see the town come to life on page through its residents and past heroes and heroines we’ve gotten to know. The Serendipity series continues to be one I turn to whenever I want a sexy, romantic read. Perfect Fling fits right in, giving us a heroine who I loved, a hero who’s a little gruff but needs the heroine in his life, even if he doesn’t realize it right away – and it’s just simply a fun read.

Favorite Scene: Cole and Erin drove back to Nick's house in comfortable silence. He didn't feel the need to discuss what went on in his father's hospital room, and Erin didn't ask. She knew from his somewhat calm demeanor that at least there had been no yelling or confrontation, and for that she was grateful. She couldn't remember ever being more exhausted. He didn't feel the need to discuss what went on in his father's hospital room, and Erin didn't ask. She knew from his somewhat calm demeanor that at least there had been no yelling or confrontation, and for that she was grateful. She couldn't remember ever being more exhausted. At the top of the stairs, she turned toward the master bedroom, expecting Cole to head the other way to the room he'd been staying in for the last couple of days. "Erin?" She turned. "What's up?" "I... Never mind." Oh, there was something, she thought, studying him. Weariness was evident in his handsome face and she realized the strain of all they'd gone through, plus Jed, was wearing on the both. "Talk to me." She walked up to where he stood, leaning on the railing. He shook his head. "There was nothing specific. I just..." Erin took a leap. "You don't want to be alone," she said, hoping she wasn't so far off base she'd be mortified when he said she was wrong. He exhaled and nodded. Relief shot through her and she held out her hand. She didn't want to be alone either. As tired as she was, there was nothing sexual in her offer, and she didn't get the feeling he was looking to cross that line again either. But they shared the same concerns over her safety and over Victoria's craziness and potential next move, and now they both were worried about Jed. It made sense that they keep each other company while waiting for the morning... and for the surgery to come." Main Characters: Erin Marsden: Erin is an Assistant District Attorney in Serendipity. She comes from a family of police officers and is thought of by everyone as the "good girl". Erin has a heart of gold and a softness about her but, at the same time, she can be a take charge kind of girl. Cole Sanders: Cole is an undercover agent in New York. He has a typical "bad boy" reputation but despite his reputation and good looks he is very uncertain about himself. He just never thinks he deserves good things in his life. His entire personality just endeared him to me. Mike & Sam Marsden: Mike & Sam are Erin's brothers. Both work on the police force and their overprotectiveness drives Erin crazy. Macy Donovan: Macy is Erin's best friend. Her family owns "The Family Restaurant" in Serendipity. She can be a spitfire but she always has a shoulder for Erin to lean on. She's loyal and very devoted. My Thoughts: Erin Marsden is the local Assistant District Attorney in Serendipity. She has a reputation for being a "good girl" but after her brother's wedding she stopped at Joe's bar and everything changed. A dance with Cole Sanders sets the ball rolling and the next morning Erin wakes up in his bed. Erin is shocked at her behavior and can't believe she had a one-night stand. With Cole Sanders who she has always had a crush on. Crawling out of Cole's bed and moving on with her life isn't as easy as she thought, especially when she finds out she's pregnant. Eventually Erin is shot in the parking lot at work and Cole becomes her self-appointed bodyguard. Each day, Erin finds herself falling more and more in love with Cole but he is determined to keep her at arms length because once she is safe he is leaving and going back undercover. Will Erin's plan to introduce Cole into her life publically help him see what he has been missing and remove the barriers he has errected around himself? Or will Erin have to accept the way things are and eventually say goodbye to the man she has come to love? Cole Sanders is the typical "bad boy" according the the people of Serendipity. Even Cole admits he wasn't a model kid growing up but the one thing he did right was have a one-night stand with Erin Marsden... he just hasn't figured it out yet. Cole grew up with a father that belittled him regularly and was never satisfied with the person Cole was. Even after Cole turned his life around and has a respectable job his father still continues to slam his character every chance he gets. Cole grew up feeling unworthy and undeserving but Erin makes him feel as if he deserves the world. Little by little Cole realizes what Erin and their baby have come to mean to him but can he walk away from the life he loves as an undercover agent for a home and family? Can he make a life in the very town he feels no longer accepts him? Perfect Fling was just that... Perfect! I loved Cole's character the most, I think. Cole was a typical "bad boy" but underneath he had so many insecurities. He felt unworthy due to his father's constant put downs. I wanted to strangle Jed. It was so touching to see this tough guy always second guessing his value and worthiness. Erin was a perfect compliment to Cole. She always knew what he was thinking and knew how to make him feel that he deserved the good things in life. She was his champion, always sticking up for him and seeing the good in him. Cole and Erin are my "Feel Good" couple of the year. I have yet to read a book this year where the couple drew me in and held me enthralled to such an extent. The storyline was great as it kept me on the edge of my seat. I had a hard time putting it down and it only wet my appetite for more of the series. Carly Phillips sucked me in like my trusty old vacuum sucks up the dirt on my carpet! Awesome 5 Star read!

This story was okay. There was enough plot to keep reading but the hero who claimed to take responsibility said for most of the book that he was not into commitment and would eventually return to his long term undercover job. Oxymoron until last ten pages. Secret FBI agent Cole becomes a body guard for attorney Erin after she is shot.

Then, on the night of her brother’s wedding, Erin throws caution to the wind and has a one-night stand with bad boy Cole Sanders. What was only supposed to be one night turns into something much more when Erin learns that she’s pregnant. Manhattan cop Cole Sanders has returned to his hometown to recover from his last undercover assignment. He’s not looking for a relationship — his past makes him feel like he’s unworthy of a woman like Erin — but he can’t get the beautiful lawyer out of his mind. When he learns she’s carrying his child, things only get more complicated between them…and that’s before a crazed stalker takes a shot at Erin. Cole’s determined to stay in Serendipity and act as Erin’s bodyguard until whoever’s targeting her is caught. What he doesn’t count on is the growing urge to stay in Serendipity with Erin, to prove that he’s capable of the love and commitment she and their child deserve. Though it’s hard to pick a favorite Carly Phillips novel, PERFECT FLING just might be it for me. Cole and Erin’s romance was enthralling and I could not put PERFECT FLING down! Cole is a man whose upbringing has left its mark on him. Combined with the isolated nature of his career, he’s not at ease around people, even those as warm and accepting as Erin. Cole is such a wonderful hero that it just about broke my heart that he didn’t see his true value as a person. Cole endeared himself to me immediately with his all-out sex appeal, protectiveness and vulnerability. I wanted to see him find happiness with Erin because they both deserved it. Erin is loving, caring and smart — my favorite kind of heroine. She’s got a spine of steel and an open heart and that made her absolutely perfect for Cole. As a couple, Erin and Cole are dynamite. The road to happily ever after is filled with ups and downs for them, but the journey is one well worth taking. The threat of danger from a stalker, work troubles and family issues are as important to the story as the romance, making PERFECT FLING a “full” story. How the various plotlines weave together gives the feeling that you’re living in Serendipity alongside Erin and Cole. I love how Ms. Phillips’s writing makes me feel like I’m part of the Serendipity community. After finishing a SERENDIPITY novel I always end up feeling like I’m leaving the town, which I hate to do. PERFECT FLING can easily be read as a standalone, although it is the second book in Ms. Phillips’s SERENDIPITY’S FINEST trilogy, featuring the Marsden siblings. The SERENDIPITY’S FINEST series is a continuation of the SERENDIPITY series, so fans like myself are sure to be happy to see familiar faces popping up throughout Erin and Cole’s book. The only downside to reading PERFECT FLING is that I want to read the next SERENDIPITY’S FINEST book, PERFECT TOGETHER, right now! Able to make you feel the connection between not just the characters but what they are dealing with her writing style takes you into their hearts, souls, and the pains of their past making you feel a part of their lives without being aware. Ms. Phillips has this uncanny ability to create characters that are a perfect blend for one another; in this case Erin was light to Cole’s darkness. However, both strong and determined in their own way to do what is best for the other. Cole Sanders lets that of his past dictate his future and that has made him into the man he is distant, hard, and cool, he has chosen a job that keeps him on a fine from that is reality and what isn’t where he doesn’t have to be himself. The man he doesn’t seem to like very much. I didn’t think it was possible for Carly Phillips to write such a male especially after her last book where we meet Mike Marsden but I was so wrong. Cole is the mysterious, the dangerous and the tortured soul you want to fix, and he is F**KIN Perfect! Your heart bleeds for him, you get angry at him and you want to hold him all at the same time. I loved Mike, didn’t think I could replace him or Dare but Cole definitely did. Erin Marsden is just as strong and stubborn as the man she once knew long ago. One night when she lets her defenses down changes her life forever. Erin is smart she knows there are secrets hidden behind Cole’s armor but he’s also a different man when he’s with her. Yet their one night turns into the forever kind and Erin must show him that he’s every bit of worth to her. When the dangers of Cole’s job threaten Erin’s life Cole does all he can to protect her even if that means walking away. Yet, when Erin is the one that pulls away Cole realized that sometimes letting go of the past is what you need to do to move ahead and grab what you want and it’s much better done when you’re not alone. One thing you can always count on in a Carly Philips book her storylines are real and sometimes heartbreaking yet in the end she brings healing where it needs to be.

This comes so close to being a favorite. Erin was wonderful - I loved her and could completely relate to her. I was so proud of how smart and honest she was. His turnaround was pretty quick and drastic once he got to it; I'm not sure that feels totally believable no matter how much I appreciated it. I thought the sex scenes were especially well done and stimulating in this book. I want some detail and sensual descriptions but also to leave enough to one's own imagination. This seemed to be the right balance. I love this town, its characters and seeing bits of them is like the joy of old friends. I definitely will keep reading this series. It's easy and comfortable to read with the town and characters well-loved and many known to us. It could be read without having read the others but its more emotionally satisfying to have gone in order I think. I get a warm feeling and smile when I read a bit about old favored characters. For example, Tess is driving now!

Fun sexy read. A one night stand that results in pregnancy? Never saw it coming. I'm not good enough for you whining that he finally get over? Never saw it coming. Bad boy's actually a good guy? Everything is telegraphed ahead, then sent invitations, and then announced before it actually shows up at the door. So much so that by the time whatever thing actually happens Fun sexy read. Cole's feelings were so all over the place even he didn't know what he wanted. The mixed signals he was sending were enough to confuse anyone. well, 4 stars because I'm a goner for pregnancy stories. Erin is pregnant after a night of sex with no strings and Cole wants no commitment but he's ready to step up for the child. Another man with commitment issues, what a bore! I didn't like so much and Erin was a sort of saint to put up with him! I can relate with his problems with his father, because his father was bad, but just because you have a bad parent, it doesn't mean you cannot be a better person! I love it!!!! Erin and Cole are so funny together and sweet. I loved that we get to hear about the others in Serendipity. I can't wait for Sam and Nicole's book and see them falling in love with eachother. I loved how Erin put Jed in his place when it came to Cole and their relationship as father and son. This was a fantastically written and the characters were just amazing to read about. Carly Phillips did an awesome job writing this book.

It was kind of a hard book to get through. The plot was okay but I thought that the more amorous scenes overshadowed the characters in the novel. Don't get me wrong, love scenes are all well and good, but it frustrates me when they are more highlighted than the plot of a novel. However I did enjoy the plot well enough. I'm not sure whether I will continue the series or not, but we'll see

This story had a good plot line for me to enjoy, but I found the pace just a little too slow for my tastes. But, overall, I enjoyed the storyline. Cole is just a man that you can't help but love. And Erin's determination to make him see the error in his ways just makes you love her as well.

Another fun series by Carly Phillips. Am enjoying her books between the other genres I enjoy. Fast read. Humor, romance, family fun drama at times, suspense, action packed, Must read in order. There was a lot more action in this book than the first in the series. I like the story development and I think the characters are written well. I also like the author's no nonsense contemporary writing style.

This one was just ok for me. I knew what would happen with Erin and Cole's one night stand. I didn't expect for Cole to stay when he found out and want more. The threat seemed to throw them together, allowing them to get to know each other. That made ok with how things ended with them.

Enjoyed the story of Cole and Erin. Even though Cole did not think he was good enough for Erin I did swoon over Cole. A definite YES. Now I can't wait for Sam's story.

If you do, you may remember that I’ve reviewed some Carly Phillips stuff before – a book and a short story. And I loved that we got to host her exclusive cover reveal for Perfect Fling back in February. Now the book is out and you KNOW I had to get my hands on it! Perfect Fling has all the things that I love in a romance: a tough heroine and bad boy hero! Read on to find out more… This is the second book in Carly Phillips’s Serendipity’s Finest series and the second full-length book by her that I’ve read. I really enjoy her writing. Her books are a lot of fun and they come chock-full of laughs, mystery, hot scenes, and lots of drama! In Perfect Fling, Erin, the heroine, is at the center of much of the laughs, mystery, hot scenes, and drama. Poor Erin! She’s the good girl; always has been, always will be. Until the night she isn’t. For me, Erin is just about the perfect heroine. She has a career, friends, family, and she knows who she is. She may not particularly like her reputation as a good girl, but she IS a good girl and has come to accept that about herself. She also fights for what she believes in and I think that’s what I like best about her. She’s founded this pro bono law practice that helps low-income families keep their homes and helps women get the child support they deserve, and I feel like that just adds fuel to the fire of Erin being an awesome human being. Then, when Erin is injured by an unknown person and they don’t know if it’s random or personal, she puts her foot down and makes sure that she either makes the decisions about her safety or at least has a say in those decisions. With a family full of police officers, that’s no easy feat! But Erin also has this vulnerable side (maybe it’s part of her good girl DNA?). It’s rare she shows that side of herself, so when she does, it has an impact…especially on Cole. And I loved seeing her push Cole beyond his emotional and commitment comfort zones. Speaking of Cole…wow, I really didn’t like him. Even though the book never mentions that Cole is a player, I thought his behavior was reminiscent of one. The way Cole treats Erin on their morning after, and pretty much every time they cross paths, reminded me of those “Hit It & Quit It” guys. So it took me a long time to warm up to his character. I think there’s even still a part of me that doesn’t quite like him, but I can hold a grudge like nobody’s business! LOL! But don’t worry, Cole DOES redeem himself and redeems himself often. He really is a good guy; he’s just had to live his life a certain way because of his job. So he may have an attitude, but it’s hard to hold it against him. Besides, the author makes it very clear why Cole acts the way he does, and usually it’s because he’s trying to save Erin the heartache of being associated with him. Together, holy hotness! Erin and Cole are absolutely combustible! There is a lot of Sexy Time and, wow, Erin and Cole certainly have a spark! As hot as the sex scenes were, I found that the scenes where they were fighting were when I started to fall in love with them as a couple. I know, I know, I’m totally twisted! But it also had me really rooting for Erin to get through to Cole even more than I already was. Bottom Line This was such a fun book to read! It had lots of laughs, a good (although easily guessed) mystery, and plenty of drama. The secondary characters were awesome and I really hope some of them get their own books! The Sexy Time was plentiful and really hot. Anyone who enjoys a fun contemporary romance will love Perfect Fling! Rating: B+ Review copy courtesy of the publisher via NetGalley

Loved this good girl vs bad boy story. After her brother Mike's wedding, Erin was feeling pretty blue. It seemed like everyone was part of a couple except her, so she stopped in at Joe's Bar because she didn't want to go home yet. There she ran into Cole, the bad boy she had a crush on in high school. No one knows what Cole has been doing since he left town, but the bad boy still draws her attention. A few dances later the heat between them is sizzling and they decide to do something with it. Ev Loved this good girl vs bad boy story. Even though they had agreed that it was a one-night thing, neither one has been able to forget that night. But Cole doesn't do relationships at all. As an undercover detective his life has no room for other people. Plus, he's well aware that his past makes him totally unsuitable to be anywhere near a woman as good as Erin. Meanwhile, Erin really doesn't care what Cole's reputation is, she knows he's a good man. That is made abundantly obvious when she ends up pregnant from that one night and Cole immediately accepts his responsibility. I loved the two of them together. Erin may be the town good girl, but she's no pushover. Though stunned by her pregnancy, she's ready to do the best she can. She's not quite sure how she's going to tell Cole, but that gets taken out of her hands when she gets shot and he overhears her talking to the doctor. Cole is stunned, her brothers are furious, and she appears to have a stalker. I loved watching her stand up to all of them over what is best to be done, and finally accepting Cole's protection. When Cole finds out about the pregnancy, he's stunned, but refuses to just walk away. With the added need to protect Erin, he moves in with her. He tries very hard to maintain his emotional distance, but being with Erin 24/7 leaves him vulnerable to the way she makes him feel. Cole really fought hard against the feelings he was beginning to have for Erin. As the son of an emotionally abusive man, Cole had spent a lot of time creating trouble as a teen. Even after he moved away and straightened up his life, becoming a detective, his father still belittles him at every turn. Added to the things he's done in the course of his undercover work, Cole feels that he is nowhere good enough for Erin. He is determined that he will leave after the danger to her is gone. But Erin constantly chips away at the walls around his heart, and dreams of what it could be like make him wonder if it could happen. In spite of his assertions that he is not a good man, Cole is very good at taking care of Erin. I loved the way he cooked for her, made sure she rested, and started getting really involved in the idea of the baby. He started to understand that he was falling for her, but the idea scared him to death and he worked harder at pushing her away, then admitting his unhappiness when he succeeded. He was stubborn about believing in his worthiness all the way to the end. Erin seems to be the only person who can see the good in Cole. Even that first night, she never would have slept with him if she hadn't believed in him. Though they had agreed on one night, no strings, she hadn't been able to forget him, and kept trying to connect with him. Finding out she was pregnant threw her into confusion. She wanted the baby, but how could she tell him about it? With him not wanting any relationship, she would be on her own. But once she did tell him, he surprised her with his determination to be involved. Having him constantly underfoot was playing havoc with her peace of mind. He claimed that he was no good for her, but she certainly felt cherished when he was around. She quickly realized she had fallen for him, but had no idea how she was going to get him to want to stay. I loved her method of simply showing him what life with her would be like. I loved watching her get to him, and ached for her when it looked like he just wasn't going to believe. The ending was sweet, as Cole finally believed in what Erin saw. The suspense was a good part of the story as it was the catalyst bringing Cole and Erin together. It wasn't super intense but still enough to keep me interested in seeing how it turned out. The identity of the stalker was no surprise, but there was a small twist about it. The final confrontation went quickly and Cole was able to protect Erin. I thought Erin's actions toward the stalker at the end were pretty classy.

Assistant District Attorney Erin Marsden has always lived her life on the straight and narrow. She is known around town as the ultimate good girl and she is okay with that because she never wanted to disappoint her family. After her brother’s wedding, a lonely Erin heads to the local bar to drown her sorrows and runs into Cole Sanders, the resident bad boy of Serendipity. A few drinks later, Cole and Erin are heading back to his apartment for the best sex of her life. After dropping out of the police academy, many people suspected Cole was into illegal stuff like drugs or organized crime, including his own father. It turns out they were right, but not in the way they thought. He is actually an undercover officer who is just returning from a case that took a year of being deep undercover, and left him with some emotional scars. Erin sees the good in him behind the shadows in his eyes, but the morning after their passionate night together, he tells her he doesn’t like long drawn out morning afters. Erin gathers up her pride and leaves. Flash forward 3 months and Erin is vomiting in the courthouse bathroom when her friend Trina insists on buying a pregnancy test immediately so that Erin can get an answer. The test is positive and Erin’s life is turned upside down, especially considering Cole hasn’t even said hi to her since that fateful night. Shortly after she finds out she’s pregnant – and still hasn’t told Cole – Erin gets shot in the parking lot at work. Cole overhears that she is pregnant while she’s talking to the nurse in the hospital and then Erin’s brothers find out as well. After other incidents at Erin’s home, Cole takes her to a secluded location to keep her safe from her stalker. I was not familiar with the Serendipity novels or with Carly Phillips and I definitely feel like I’ve been missing out. I could absolutely relate to Erin with her independence and determination to continue her work at important places, like the small office she goes to in order to help abused women. I loved that Erin was written as a strong woman throughout, even when the future of her relationship with Cole is in doubt. She fights for what she wants but when she thinks it is not going to happen, she holds on to her pride and focuses on her child and her life. Cole was also completely loveable even though he was convinced that Erin and their baby would be better off without him. He was protective but not overbearing and he genuinely wanted what was best for Erin, even though he was misguided as to what that was. :{Show Spoiler} While Erin grew up in an ideal family, Cole grew up with his father insulting him and telling him he was never going to amount to anything. Eventually his mother got fed up with the treatment and she took Cole and ran away. She remarried and while he has a good relationship with his step-dad, the issues with his dad have really weighed on him. Erin helps to bridge the way for him to develop a relationship with his dad who suffers a heart attack. (*more spoilers*)There is a very heartwarming scene in the hospital between Cole and his dad where Cole finally hears from his dad why he acted the way he did and the two resolve to start working on their relationship so that Cole and Erin’s baby can get to know their grandfather. I liked the way Phillips weaved the stalker storyline throughout the book but made it secondary to the relationship between Cole and Erin. Sometimes you read a story like this and the subplot of the danger to the hero/heroine ends up taking over most of the book and character development suffers because of it. In this story there were times when the danger Erin was in was the focus, but I felt that even those moments were written in a way that still kept the attention on Erin and Cole (i.e. how protective Cole was). I figured out who the stalker was very early on in the book, but that didn’t take away from the storyline for me. We also get a sneak peak at who Sam is going to be with and I cannot wait for that story! Rating: B+

Buy This Book While every now and then Carly Phillips releases a book that falls into the dud category for me, most of the time she writes solid if not extraordinary contemporary romances. Perfect Fling falls into the latter category. It is a good solid story that keeps you turning the pages even after everyone else in the house has turned out the lights. However it will probably not have you turning back to page one when you have finished the book. ”Erin Marsden had always been Serendipity’s good girl.” This is the opening line of Perfect Fling and sets the tone for the heroine’s personality right from the beginning. Erin’s father is the retired Chief of Police and both of her brothers followed him into the law enforcement field. Having so much law and order testosterone in the house forced Erin into her good girl bubble; a bubble she never left until she ran into Cole Sanders at her brother’s wedding. A little alcohol and a lifetime of lusting gets the proper assistant district attorney Erin to let down her hair and have one down and dirty night with Serendipity’s resident bad boy. Cole Sanders has issues. His main issue is his verbally and at one point physically abusive father who blames Cole for the breakup of his marriage to Cole’s mother. Jed Sander’s constant demeaning of his son has left Cole scarred and afraid of commitment. Deep down he believes his father’s judgment that he is no good. He even follows his father into law enforcement (Jed was the assistant Chief of Police under Erin’s father), subconsciously seeking his approval. However, Cole goes into the dark life of undercover work instead of the public version his father chose. After two years of an undercover assignment that has left Cole drained and wondering who he is, Cole has returned to Serendipity for some down time before being sent out into the field again. When Erin sees Cole again after their one night stand, it is clear that he wants nothing in terms of a permanent relationship. Hurt that he obviously does not return her regard, Erin resolves to leave him alone and get on with her life. Getting herself back on track is working out fine until after weeks of thinking she is battling the flu, Erin discovers she is pregnant. Before she can tell Cole about the baby, she manages to get herself shot in the parking lot of the courthouse. Cole overhears her telling the emergency room doctor she is pregnant and then all previous relationship bets are off. When Erin’s overbearing brother Mike insists that Erin be taken care of and protected until they discover who shot at her, Erin digs in her heels. Cole takes her feet and shoves them aside as he insists on taking care of her now that he knows she is carrying his child. The good girl/bad boy trope is a familiar one, but Carly Phillips does a good job of not making this story stale. Erin’s character was likeable and mature without being too perfect. Cole was the quintessential bad boy only in his mind. His reputation stemmed from a few teenage scrapes that no one will let him forget because his father is always there to remind them. Unfortunately he cannot let his reputation go either and his constant beating up on himself does get slightly tiresome. The underlying mystery of who is after Erin is solid enough to entertain, but pretty transparent from the beginning. Phillips does throw in a twist that sets up a future book and that was enough to keep the reader guessing. The romance barely escapes the “big misunderstanding” and in the hands of a less competent author could have gone very wrong. However, Phillips pulls it off and creates a story that you will want to read to the very end.
