Contains more then 50 unique illustrations. "The Count of Monte Cristo" is one of the most enduring classics of English literature. It is a great adventure novel loaded with well written characters and enough action. Penned by Alexandre Dumas, it traces the life of Edmond Dantes, a young French sailor who is at the threshold of happiness and prosperity. He has been made Captain of the Pharaon, and was about to marry his beautiful fiance Mercedes. He was at the peak of his health and life could not be more perfect. But then everything changed when on his wedding day, he was falsely accused of treason by being a spy for Napoleon Bonaparte, and sentenced to life imprisonment on an island off the coast. Through his torturous incarceration, Dantes vows revenge on those who betrayed him. With the help of a fellow inmate, Dantes does escape from prison along with a fortune that he had found on the island. Thus begun the revenge of Dantes, who arrives in France disguised as a mysterious nobleman, and seeks out the people he thought were his friends who had plotted on his imprisonment. The reader waits with bated breath for every incident to unfold, and the theme of vendetta is brilliantly brought out. The end result is one of tremendous satisfaction as justice is done and the wrong doers are punished, a theme as old as eternity. It is a rare treat to examine the rich prose of a magnificent storyteller and "The Count of Monte Cristo" will remain one of the best tales ever told in the history of literature.
